The 8-megapixel Canon PowerShot S5 IS has a big 36-432mm (35mm equivalent), 12x optical zoom lens. It’s loaded with advanced features, including Optical Image Stabilizer technology and the DIGIC III image processor with improved red-eye correction and Face Detection technology, which finds multiple faces in the frame and sets the focus and flash automatically. The high-resolution 2.5-inch LCD tilts and swivels for easy composition and viewing of shots. It has full manual and auto modes, and 14 different scene modes, features adjustable white balance and ISO up to 1600, and can shoot approximately 1.5 frames per second. List Price: $500.

If you want a camera that’s smaller than most advanced compacts but still has a big zoom, then take a look at the 7.2-megapixel Casio EX-V7 Hi-Zoom. It has a 7x optical zoom (38-266mm) and comes with four image-stabilization technologies to help you get the sharpest possible shots at any focal length. Composing or reviewing images can be done on the Super Bright 2.5-inch LCD. A newly designed Exilim Engine 2.0 image processor gives you more tonal and exposure controls with the ability to reduce noise in designated color regions, such as the sky. Additional features include both manual and auto modes, 33 Photo Best Shot modes, 10 Movie Best Shot modes, adjustable white balance, ISO sensitivity up to 800 and a histogram display with optional histograms for Red, Green and Blue. List Price: $300.

Fujifilm’s FinePix S9100 is a 9-megapixel compact with a 10.7x optical zoom of 28-300mm (35mm equivalent). The Super CCD-HR Sensor and Fujinon Lens Optics combine to deliver high performance with low noise, helping you take crisp images even in low light. When using the Intelligent Flash, iFlash adjusts the flash output to complement the scene conditions so subjects always appear natural. The tilting 2-inch LCD and live histogram display greatly simplifies image composition. Other features include manual and auto modes, adjustable white balance, a maximum ISO of 1600 at full resolution, and a capture rate of 1.5 frames per second during continuous shooting. List Price: $699.

The 7.1-megapixel Kodak EasyShare P712 features a Schneider-Kreuznach Variogon lens with optical stabilization and a 12x optical zoom that has a range of 36-432mm (35mm equivalent). With a 0.07-second click-to-capture rate, the improved autofocus system helps you better capture fast-moving action shots, whether you’re in the wild or at the big game. The camera uses Kodak’s Color Science image processing for producing consistent, accurate colors across all of your photos. It has manual and auto shooting modes, 17 scene modes, adjustable white balance, five different color modes, including sepia and black-and-white, and can capture 1.6 frames per second. List Price: $450.
