Online video- and photo-sharing service Phanfare uses Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3) to provide unlimited storage and backup for its customers’ videos and photos at multiple secure locations across the U.S. Phanfare customers have the added peace of mind of knowing that there are copies of their important image files at both a Phanfare data center in New Jersey and at Amazon.com’s data centers. Phanfare provides unlimited backup of original, full-sized, high-res images and original video content. Unlike some other online sharing services, Phanfare customers can download these originals at any time for no additional charge. Phanfare subscribers receive an unlimited amount of storage, making Phanfare one of the most economical ways to both share and preserve digital images and video.

Can you imagine leasing reliable backup storage capacity for the low price of 15¢ per gigabyte per month? That’s what Jungle Disk charges. Even better, you only pay for what you use—you’re not obligated to rent your storage space in preset chunks. Jungle Disk is an easy-to-use software application that lets you store files and back up data securely to Amazon.com’s S3. Your data is fully encrypted at all times and there are no minimum or maximum size restrictions. Browse your data just as though it was on a local drive. You even can schedule automatic backups.

ibackup specializes in handling files that are compressed to save you bandwidth and transfer time. Data is protected by 128-bit SSL encryption. The software app provides intuitive wizards for interactive backups and backup/restore scheduling. Storage space is leased by the month or year (at a reduced price). For a low additional fee, ibackup offers RemotePC, a service that allows you to securely access your Internet-enabled office or home computer. A small business version is suitable for offices of up to 100 users.

Time to get your feet wet? MediaMax, powered by Streamload, is offering 25 GB of free online storage. There are some restrictions, for example; with the free account, you’re limited to 1 GB of total downloads per month, but, hey—if you’re looking for some data security on the cheap, here’s the ticket. You can access your data from any PC via the Internet and directly send digital images, video and other data files to anyone by e-mailing them a direct hyperlink. After you’ve experienced the free service, you can optionally upgrade to the Elite level for $9.95 per month and enjoy 250 GB of storage space and 25 GB of monthly downloads (and no files size limitations).
