    TRAVELING PORTFOLIOS
If you don’t need the ability to back up or review photos while shooting, but like the idea of carrying your portfolio in your pocket, here are some additional options.

Toolbox: Photo & Multimedia ViewersSanDisk Sansa View
If size is your concern, then SanDisk’s new Sansa View is an ideal choice. The Sansa View manages to pack a 2.4-inch display and 8 GB or 16 GB of storage into the size of a small cell phone (4.3x1.9x0.4 inches). If that’s not enough capacity, the included MicroSD/SDHC expansion slot can further extend to a possible 24 GB in capacity (with an optional 8 GB card). JPEG images are the only format supported, but they can be played back vertically or in landscape (widescreen) view. The Sansa View supports a variety of audio and video formats, includes a digital FM radio with 20 channel presets and also functions as a voice recorder with a built-in microphone. Great for long trips, the long-lasting, rechargeable battery provides up to 35 hours of continuous audio or seven hours of video playback. List Price: $149 (8 GB); $199 (16 GB).

Toolbox: Photo & Multimedia ViewersApple iPod Touch
Ever at the forefront of technology, Apple recently wowed once more with the update to its iPod line of portable media devices. Yesterday’s basic model, the newly renamed iPod classic, now holds up to 160 GB of content, including photos and videos. The new iPod nano now also supports photo and video playback like its bigger brother, featuring a 2.0-inch, 320 x 420-pixel screen on a 2.75x2.06x0.26-inch player.

But of real interest to photographers who want to show off photos wherever they go, the iPod touch is the crown jewel of the line. Featuring a 3.5-inch diagonal widescreen display, the multi-touch interface gives you control literally at your fingertips. By pointing and tapping, you can flick to scroll through image thumbnails, touch to view full screen and zoom in by spreading two fingers. Rotate the iPod touch, and it automatically switches to widescreen view. The ambient light sensor automatically adjusts brightness to surroundings for better viewing of images, supported in the JPEG, BMP, TIFF, PSD and PNG formats. Since the iPod series is known primarily for its music capabilities, it comes as no surprise that you can also create slideshows, complete with songs and transitions. The iPod touch sports wireless Internet browsing, and it also plays video and more. If you don’t have an Apple computer, don’t worry—all iPods are compatible with Windows PCs. List Price: $299 (8 GB); $399 (16 GB).

Toolbox: Photo & Multimedia ViewersMio DigiWalker C520
Designed as a GPS navigation system, Mio’s DigiWalker C520 also functions as a complete multimedia player. Offering photo, video and music playback from the SD/MMC memory card slot on a crisp 4.3-inch LCD screen with split-screen display, the GPS receiver also provides accurate navigation coast-to-coast, despite obstructions like tall buildings. Text-to-speech functionality gives voice prompt directions so drivers can keep their eyes on the road. An embedded, subscription-based TMC Receiver gives up-to-the-minute traffic information, and the C520 comes preloaded with detailed maps. A Bluetooth cell-phone interface provides hands-free calling with compatible cell phones, and the C520 comes packaged with a variety of useful accessories like an in-car charger, device mounts and a USB cable for data transmission. List Price: $399.
