Page 2 of 12 The 12.8-megapixel EOS 5D is the lowest-cost, most compact and lightest “full-frame” sensor D-SLR. Its image sensor is the same size as a full 35mm film frame, so any lens used on the 5D will “see” exactly what it sees when used on a 35mm SLR—great for wide-angle fans, but telephoto buffs lose the “crop factor” of the smaller-sensor D-SLRs. Picture Styles let you control color, contrast and sharpness in-camera. Atop Canon’s D-SLR lineup are the full-blown pro models, rugged cameras with top performance and feature sets. The 8.2-megapixel EOS-1D Mark II n action camera is the D-SLR “speed king,” capable of shooting bursts of up to 48 full-resolution JPEG images or 22 RAW ones at 8.5 per second, with AF performance to match and a 200,000-shot shutter. The top-of-the-line EOS-1Ds Mark II, the “megapixel king” of the 35mm SLR form-factor D-SLRs, can shoot its 16.7-megapixel images at 4 fps (up to 32 JPEG, 11 RAW) and features a full-frame sensor. System Accessories: Canon offers more than 60 lenses for EOS cameras, and the Digital Rebel models and EOS 30D can use them all. The larger-sensor EOS 5D, EOS-1D Mark II n and EOS-1Ds can use all but the five EF-S lenses, which were designed specifically for the smaller-sensor cameras. EF lens focal lengths run from 14mm superwide-angle and 15mm full-frame fisheye to 600mm supertelephoto. (These focal lengths frame like 22mm to 960mm lenses on a 35mm camera when attached to the Digital Rebel models and EOS 30D because of their smaller image sensors.) EF-S lenses include a 10-22mm superwide zoom (equivalent to 16-35mm on a 35mm camera), three midrange zooms and a 60mm macro lens. The line includes 17 IS (Image Stabilizer) lenses, which shift lens elements to counteract camera shake, allowing for sharp handheld shooting up to three shutter speeds slower than is otherwise possible. There are also 1.4x and 2x teleconverters, which can be used with all camera models. All current Canon EX-series Speedlites (except the 220EX) and D-SLR bodies provide Canon’s E-TTL II flash system, which fires an evaluating pre-flash and takes into account subject distance information just before exposure, ignores highly reflective objects in the scene and uses data from both ambient and pre-flash readings to provide excellent exposures. D-SLR-compatible flash units include the Speedlite 580EX (ISO 100/GN 190 in feet at 105mm) and 430EX (GN 141), plus the Macro Ring Lite MR-14EX and Macro Twin Lite MT-24EX. Wireless E-TTL II operation is possible via the ST-E2 controller. The Digital Rebel models and the EOS 30D also have built-in flash units.   |
