Those
moving up to a D-SLR from a compact digital camera will be happy to
learn that the K100D uses SD cards to store images (same as many
compact digital cameras) and widely available AA batteries. The camera
manual says a set of four AA lithium batteries is good for around 660
shots; I got more than 1,300 on a set of Energizer e2 Lithiums, with
Shake Reduction switched on for nearly all of them. (Besides good
capacity, lithium batteries have an excellent shelf life and great
cold-weather performance.)
Another K100D feature is a big 2.5-inch LCD monitor, making it easy
to read menus and check your images. A Digital Preview function lets
you examine an image on the LCD monitor before taking it.
In this heady era of 8-megapixel-plus entry-level D-SLRs, the Pentax
K100D’s 6.1 megapixels might seem a bit “light,” but image quality is
very good. And with a full range of shooting features, good performance
and Shake Reduction for just $619 (body only), this camera is an
excellent value.
