2005 Buyer's Guide:
Advanced Compact Cameras $400-$800

Sleek And Lightweight, These Versatile Cameras Offer Something For Everyone

By Zachary Singer

Advanced digital compacts in the $400 to $800 price range are for serious photographers who need an easy-to-carry camera that provides real photographic capability. The cameras featured here all have sufficient resolution to give you beautiful 11x14-inch prints when you use proper technique. Many of the cameras can produce images that enlarge nicely to 16x20 inches.

You’ll have a choice of a straight-through optical finder or an electronic viewfinder (EVF). Although neither is as responsive as a D-SLR’s ground-glass finder in most conditions, both offer a clearer view than the D-SLR in dim lighting. Like rear LCD monitors (and unlike D-SLRs), the EVFs also can show live images and information from the imaging sensor. That means you’ll be able to see the effect of all your settings, including white balance and exposure, on the monitor before you take the shot.
