While compact digital cameras are limited to the range of focal lengths of their built-in zoom lenses (and maybe a telephoto and a wide-angle attachment), D-SLRs accept a wide range of interchangeable lenses. Thus, you can have just the right lens for any shooting situation. Canon offers more than 60 EF lenses, with focal lengths from a 14mm superwide-angle and 15mm full-frame fish-eye to a 600mm super-telephoto (these focal lengths frame like 22mm to 960mm lenses used on a 35mm camera when attached to the Digital Rebel models and EOS 20D and 30D because of their smaller image sensors), plus a number of EF-S lenses (which can be used only on the EOS 20D, 30D and Digital Rebel models) as wide as 10-22mm (equivalent to 16-35mm on a 35mm camera). There are also 1.4x and 2x tele-converters. Canon’s USM (Ultrasonic Motor) lenses feature quick, near-silent autofocusing motors, and USM lenses that have focusing scales permit manual fine-tuning after autofocusing without switching to manual-focus mode. L-series (luxury) lenses are pro optics, featuring the best designs, materials, dust and moisture sealing, and performance. IS lenses contain image stabilizers, which shift lens elements to counteract camera shake and thus allow for sharp hand-held shooting up to three shutter speeds slower than is otherwise possible. DO lenses contain diffractive optics, which allow for much more compact lenses, and correct chromatic and spherical aberrations. Flash. Canon’s E-TTL II flash system, supplied with all current EX-series Speedlites and D-SLR bodies, fires an evaluating pre-flash and takes into consideration subject distance information just before exposure, ignores highly reflective objects in the scene, and uses both ambient and pre-flash readings to provide excellent exposures. Flash units include the Speedlite 580EX (ISO 100 Guide Number 190, in feet at 105mm) and 430EX (GN 141), plus the Macro Ring Lite MR-14EX and Macro Twin Lite MT-24EX. Wireless E-TTL II operation is possible. The Digital Rebel models and the 20D and 30D also have built-in flash units. Other accessories include timer and wireless remote controls, battery grips, interchangeable focusing screens for the higher-end models, a Data Verification Kit and a wireless file transmitter for the pro models. Software includes EOS Capture 1.5 for remote camera operation and Digital Photo Professional Version 2.0 for dedicated RAW image processing.   |
