photo finishFine-art effects can add a lot of visual excitement to your photography, but mastering the illustration tools to achieve those effects can take a lot of time and practice. That’s where creative software filters and effects can be a terrific help. The Photographer’s Edge Library from Graphic Authority—a set of DVDs with more than 185 custom photo edges, unique brushes and composite frames—can inspire and help you to re-create sophisticated effects quickly. Compatible with Adobe Photoshop and Photoshop Elements, the effects are organized and easy to browse in this DVD library.

Navigating the library is simple, and there’s no installation needed to get started. Just drop in one of the discs and you get a view of various folders that contain tutorials, catalogues and products. You’ll be inspired as you browse the options, and when you’re ready to select a tool or effect, you can call it up from within Photoshop.

photo finishFor example, to load a brush, click on the Brush Tool in Photoshop, go to the Properties bar drop-down and click on Replaces Brushes. Now you can browse the DVD’s catalogue of brushes to use. I selected Aging-Grunge Brushes & Backgrounds for the image here. Once you’ve chosen a set of brushes, you can control brush size and other settings just as you do with the brushes supplied by Adobe. The brushes I selected allowed me to create this well-weathered look.

Choosing a frame for your photo is another way to add a finishing touch. The tutorials will help you get the steps down, but it’s basically a quick process of opening up your desired frame, duplicating the image and using the Library’s composite images and your photo to create a background, edge or frame for your photos with an easy drag-and-drop method.

Getting the look you want will take some fun experimentation, and you definitely want to be working on a copy of your image file, not the original. There’s really no limit to what you can do with the tools in the Library. Use them for creative projects like greeting cards or frame-ready fine art for your home, or make your portfolio look more refined and sophisticated. Estimated Street Price: $179.
