Short Report: Epson Stylus Photo R200
Photo prints, CD labeling and more from this versatile, affordable printer
I can't help but be amazed at what Epson has managed to put into a $99 (estimated street price) printer. The Stylus Photo R200 features excellent six-color printing, including tiny three-picoliter droplets, individual ink tanks, borderless printing and two USB connections (front and back) so you can connect both your desktop and laptop computers, plus direct CD printing. That's a lot of capabilities in a printer at any price.
The printer's CD-printing feature is especially alluring. Now, anyone can buy blank white CDs and print an attractive label directly to the disc. No more worries about using labels that aren't centered, have bubbles in them or could later fall off. The CDs look professional and colorful, and can be tailored to your specific needs. The Stylus Photo R200 includes a CD design program that lets you put in a background, add other photos and include text, too. While it's an older design that has separate windows for text and photo input and adjustment, the program does come free and it's simple to use.
The Epson Stylus Photo R200 is slower than more expensive printers, taking approximately four minutes for a full-sized, 8.5x11-inch color print. But all things considered, that's a small trade-off for a true photo printer at this price. With its CD-printing capabilities, the Epson Stylus Photo R200 would be an excellent second printer for the photographer who needs to make CD labels, while offering backup photo printing and direct connection to a laptop when necessary.
