Card Error message from Olympus xd card

    I just returned from a wonderful family holiday with my Olympus E-410 D-SLR (great camera!). My card reader wouldn't read the xd card and when I put the card back into the camera to read it I got a "Card Error" message! Nothing I did worked. I phoned Olympus and their technician advised me never to remove the card from the camera as any static electricity crossing the card from puting it in and out of slots can cause it to be corrupt and unuseable. Always transfer images directly from the camera to your computer. Don't use a card reader again was his advice! This is the first time I've heard this in five years of using digital cameras. Have you come across this before? Is it an problem only with Olympus? Right now I have the card at a data recovery center to see if they can get anything from it.
