Aimed squarely at enthusiasts, the latest SLR from Olympus offers several unique capabilities for creative expression

The new E-30 fits into the Olympus D-SLR line-up between the pro E-3 and advanced-amateur E-520 models, but closer to the E-3. It offers the most megapixels of any Olympus D-SLR and is loaded with features aimed at the creative artist who likes to go beyond the straight shot. Like the E-3 and E-520, the E-30 incorporates sensor-shift image stabilization that works with all lenses. And like all Olympus E-System D-SLRs, the E-30 offers the proven Olympus-pioneered Supersonic Wave Filter sensor-dust reduction system, Shadow Adjustment Technology (automatically controls shadows and highlights) and multiple wireless flash capability.

Dual Memory-Card Slots
The E-30 has slots for both CompactFlash cards (including high-speed UDMA cards) and xD-Picture cards. You can copy images between cards in-camera. If you accidentally open the card-slot cover while an image is being written to a card, the E-30 holds the image data in buffer memory and continues writing when the cover is closed.

New 12.3-Megapixel Live MOS Sensor
While the other three members of the Olympus D-SLR family have 10-megapixel Live MOS image sensors, the E-30 has a new 12.3-megapixel Live MOS unit. State-of-the-art amplifier circuitry and the latest Olympus TruePic III+ image processor work with the sensor to improve dynamic range, color fidelity and noise reduction.

Face Detection
All Olympus E-System D-SLRs offer Face Detection Technology, which can find and track up to eight faces in a scene, optimizing exposure and focus accordingly. With the E-30, Face Detection works in Live View mode, too. You also can use Face Detection during playback to check an expression on a face quickly.

2.7-Inch, Free-Angle LCD Monitor With Live View
The E-30’s Live View LCD monitor tilts and swivels to just about any orientation like the E-3’s, but is larger (2.7 vs. 2.5 inches) and boasts a 176-degree viewing angle for easy odd-angle shooting. New high-speed imager AF provides an uninterrupted Live View (but operates only with compatible lenses). Hybrid AF focuses first with the imager, then uses the camera’s primary phase-detection AF system when you fully depress the shutter button and works with all lenses. You also can focus manually, magnifying the LCD image 5X, 7X or 10X. Live View shows the effects of exposure and white-balance adjustments, shadow adjustment technology effects and depth of field. You can display fine or coarse gridlines or a cross-hair scale.

Art Effect Filters
The E-30 provides six Art Effect Filters. The Soft Focus filter produces a dreamy diffusion effect; the Pop Art filter emphasizes bright colors for a hyper-saturated look; the Grainy Film filter produces a grainy, high-contrast monochrome image; the Pale & Light filter produces a now-popular desaturated effect; the Pin Hole filter gives a vignetted “toy-camera” look; and the Light Tone filter produces a soft-lit effect. Art Filters are activated via the camera’s mode dial, and their effects can be seen in real-time on the Live View LCD monitor.
