Olympus E-30
Aimed squarely at enthusiasts, the latest SLR from Olympus offers several unique capabilities for creative expression
The Live View LCD, optical viewfinder and top control panel can display on-demand a new Level Gauge, which shows you when the camera is zeroed along both roll (horizontal) and pitch (vertical) axes. This makes it easy to ensure the camera is level even when the horizon doesn’t appear in the picture and to avoid keystoning in shots of buildings.
Live View Multi-Exposure
The E-30 makes multiple-exposure composite photos easy. Just call up a saved image on the Live View monitor, then record a new image onto it. You also can merge recorded RAW images in-camera using the Multiple Exposure edit mode. You can combine up to four images into a single photo with this feature.
Multiple Aspect Ratios
You always can crop an image using your image-editing software, but it’s nice to compose and shoot in the desired aspect ratio in the first place. The E-30 lets you choose from nine aspect ratios: the Four Thirds System’s standard 4:3 (and 3:4, if you don’t wish to rotate the camera to shoot in vertical format); 16:9 wide-screen; 35mm’s popular 3:2; 5:4 (fits traditional 8x10 photo paper without cropping); 7:6; 6:5; 7:5; and 6:6 square. You can shoot in any of these using the optical viewfinder or the Live View LCD monitor.
New 14-54mm ƒ/2.8-3.5 II Zoom
Olympus introduced a new Zuiko 14-54mm ƒ/2.8-3.5 II zoom with the E-30, which will serve as the kit lens and works with the new high-speed imager AF Live View feature. Equivalent to a 28-108mm lens on a 35mm camera, the new zoom is splash- and dustproof (although, ironically, the E-30 isn’t), and features a circular aperture for more pleasing backgrounds in selective-focus shots.
